Semi-automatic pallet wrappers: a buyer’s guide

What to look for in a semi-automatic pallet wrapper: turntable or rotary arm, pre-stretch, site needs, data, service and how to pay.

INNOV8 semi-automatic pallet wrapping machine

A semi-automatic pallet wrapper takes the hard work out of wrapping by hand and puts the same amount of film on every pallet. But the machine is only part of the story: the film you run and how the machine is set up decide what each pallet really costs. Here’s what to look for.

What does a semi-automatic pallet wrapper do?

An operator places the pallet, attaches the film and starts the cycle. The machine then wraps the load to a set programme, so every pallet gets the same number of rotations, the same tension and the same overlap.

Turntable or rotary arm?

Most warehouses use a turntable machine, where the pallet rotates while the film carriage travels up and down the mast. Rotary arm machines move the film around a stationary pallet, which can suit very heavy or unstable loads. For most standard UK pallets, a turntable is the simpler choice.

Why powered pre-stretch matters

Powered pre-stretch stretches the film before it reaches the load, so each metre goes further. The higher the pre-stretch, the more the film matters: at 300% pre-stretch, a machine works hardest with film specified for it. That’s why we pair our machines with Nanofilm and FiberFilm, which hold loads securely while putting less film on every pallet.

What to check before you buy

  • Your loads: pallet size, weight and the tallest load you’ll wrap.
  • Your site: floor space, power supply, and whether you need a pit or a loading ramp.
  • Options: a taller mast for high loads, or weigh-while-you-wrap scales.
  • Data: whether the machine reports film use, breaks and throughput, so you can control costs.
  • Support: installation, training, when the warranty starts and how often it’s serviced.

How INNOV8 compares

Our INNOV8 semi-automatic pallet wrapper is a 1,650mm turntable model with 300% pre-stretch gears, wrapping loads up to 2.0m high, and it’s in stock in the UK. It needs only a spare corner and a standard 3-pin socket, with a loading ramp as standard, so there’s no pit or groundworks. Options include a 2.3m mast and weigh-while-you-wrap.

Cloud Data comes pre-wired and connects over GSM, with no IT project, showing film breaks, throughput and film used per pallet, live. Every quotation includes delivery, installation by our own technicians and training, and the one-year warranty runs from the date of install, not shipment.

How much does a pallet wrapper cost?

It depends on the model, the options and how you pay. You can buy outright, or with Pay Per Pallet you pay one fixed price per pallet, covering the machine, film, support and reporting in one weekly invoice, with no upfront capital cost (subject to site survey and minimum throughput agreement). You don’t need a site survey to get a written quotation.

One supplier for machine and film

When wrapping goes wrong, split responsibility means no responsibility. With INNOV8, the machine, the film and the data come from one supplier, so one team is accountable for every pallet.
